How to Size a Solar Inverter
Inverter sizing should start with the loads that need to operate simultaneously. You should also account for motor starting currents, PV input limits, battery voltage, phase configuration and whether the system is grid-tied, off-grid or hybrid.
EliteVolt Systems can help with system assessment, equipment selection, installation and commissioning in Ghana.
What to consider
- Which appliances must run at the same time.
- Startup demand from motors, pumps and compressors.
- Battery voltage, phase and inverter surge rating.
- Maximum PV voltage, current and array power in the inverter datasheet.
Practical sizing steps
Start by listing which appliances must run at the same time, then add their rated watts to estimate continuous running load. Leave out loads that can be scheduled at different times and make a separate note of motors, pumps, refrigerators and compressors, whose startup demand can briefly exceed their running demand.
Apply a design margin to the simultaneous load and select the next suitable inverter rating. Then verify surge capability, battery voltage, phase, output waveform and the inverter's maximum PV voltage, current and array power from its own datasheet. A calculator estimate cannot confirm those compatibility limits.
Get a system assessment
A site assessment and load analysis can produce a more reliable system design than using a generic panel or inverter count. Contact EliteVolt Systems for a project-specific assessment.
